Within this work different glasses from various ages and places in the northern Waldviertel (Forest Region, Lower Austria) were sampled. Furthermore those sands were analysed which had potential as raw material in the glass production. The original glass production always followed the raw materials, wood and quartz. The wood was burned to ash to provide potash as flux. Quartz was either gathered in stone quarries or sands pits close to the glasshouses. Due to impurity of quartz and sands the glasses had a greenish colour, which was countered with the use of the decolourising powers of manganese. The investigated region belongs to the Eisgarn Pluton of the Southbohemian Batholith in the Bohemian Massif with relicts of the sediment cover of the Klikov and Lipnice formation. The sand samples were analysed using sieve analysis and Atomic Absorption Analysis where the concentrations of K, Na, Mg, Ca, Fe and Al have been measured. Furthermore thin sections were examined for their microscopic textures and composition. The Atomic Absorption Analysis of the glass samples was broadened for the elements Co, Cu, Ni, Cr and Mn. Finally the samples were compared.
