Abstract

The demand of materials used in the processing of plastics is increasing due to the ever-increasing application of plastic components. Wear not only leads to increasing costs but also hampers automation due to necessary maintenance. For this reason, the wear behavior of five high-alloyed plastic mold steels were tested in the tribological three-body system plastic melt/steel/glass fiber using the testing method for platelet-shaped test specimen, which reflects the abrasive wear in the application of glass fiber reinforced polymer melts. The steels differ in their production route and alloy design. The test conditions are the same for all steels and are checked during the tests, examined for possible influences and evaluated for their importance. In addition, suggestions are made for the elimination of influencing factors like the sample cleaning and the residual moisture in the plastic used. Finally, the results obtained are compared with wear tests carried out under comparable conditions.
