Abstract

Besides reducing energy consumption, switching to renewable sources of energy, and increasing efficiency in all energy-intensive industries, Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) is one of the most promising future technology to minimize the emission of greenhouse gases. One of these decarbonization processes is called post-combustion capture, since the separation of the carbon dioxide takes place after the combustion process. A suitable washing medium is introduced together with the raw gas into a contact apparatus, whereby the CO2 is bound in the washing medium and can be freed again in a regeneration step. The pure CO2 obtained in this way can subsequently be fed to a further use or to permanent underground storage. The regenerated medium is then returned to the separation apparatus. In this work, the suitability of two different absorption devices was investigated with the common absorption medium Monoethanolamine (MEA): a spray scrubber and a packed column. For this purpose, a spray scrubber test facility, including a desorption unit, was constructed in the technical laboratory of the Montan Universitaet of Leoben. At the same time, a test facility with a packed column was built at the hard coal fired EVN power plant in Dürnrohr. In both plants, numerous trials were made to characterize the separation behavior in these different absorption devices. In parallel, a mathematical model was developed in Matlab®, which can be used to calculate the material, chemical and hydraulic parameters of the absorption process. Extensive parameter studies were carried out at both experimental facilities, which were published in numerous publications. The results of these investigations are well comparable to the literature values of larger experimental plants, which show the suitability of the data especially of the packing column. Up to now, there is no plant for the spray scrubber which would be comparable with the plant in Leoben with respect to dimensioning and process design. However, the results show a basic suitability for a spray scrubber for CO2 separation. The results of the model could be validated with the test results and literature values and showed a good agreement.
