Abstract

The dispersion step is of great relevance to a lot of mineral processing procedures. The process of wind sifting is no exception in this context. In transverse air-stream cage-sifters two acts are of importance in the dispersion step. The first one is to completely disintegrate agglomerates, which are contained in the feed material, as far as possible, so that the particles can be individually supplied to the actual separation process. The second part is to create an almost even distribution of feed material over the circumference of the cage, because a more even distribution results in a better overall performance of the sifting process. This applies to the quality of the separation as well as to the quantity of processable material per hour. To be able to observe the dispersion process and measure the influences on it, a suitable experimental apparatus was designed. Subsequent to the start-up phase the processes concerning the distribution over the circumference and possible improvements were investigated. This includes the influence of the number, design and placement of the feed inlets and also the peripheral velocity of the distribution plate. Furthermore the effect of the mass flow rate of the feed and of installations on the distribution plate, like for example carrier blades to take along the material, were analyzed. The analysis of the outcomes showed, that the design of the feed inlet has a considerably positive effect regarding the dispersion characteristics, whereas carrier blades did not have a sufficient impact on the outcome of the tests.
