Abstract
Magna Steyr produces four different models of cars and one car body at their factory in Graz. For the maintenance of the different manufacturing lines, Magna Steyr has set up seven different departments. Two of the maintenance departments are responsible for the bodywork lines. Other two departments take care of the assembly lines. The paint shop and the engineering department have separated maintenance departments. For all the other infrastructure and generally used equipment a central maintenance department has been set up. The objective of this thesis was to investigate the exact tasks of the different departments and find similarities. The latter have to be discussed and recommended actions should be given. The first step was to define a technical questionnaire to find out the different tasks. This questionnaire had two independent parts. The first one asked about the tasks that are directly related to equipment. The second part asks the heads of the maintenance departments about equipment-unrelated tasks, like training and education, planning tasks and further on. The activities of the different departments are then compared and similar tasks have to be identified. These similarities are the pool for possible synergetic potential. The recommended course of action states all the found possible synergetic potential and discusses them in detail. All the synergies have to be economical advantageous. It was found that there are six tasks that are similar in all the different departments but there is the common problem of a lack of detailed effort records. The topic of compressed air and compressors maintenance is separated from this thesis, because a special project team is installed to investigate the problem. The findings of this thesis are that the current situation is good as it is. The splitting of the different maintenance tasks is reasonable and according to up to date literature. All the found synergies are not core competences of the different departments and are just at the interfering borders of the fields of responsibilities.
