Abstract
Within the scope of the Underground Sun Storage Project by the company RAG Rohöl-Aufsuchungs Aktiengesellschaft, the tolerance of an underground gas storage against hydrogen has been proved. The present thesis deals with the technical suitability of the steel types L80 and P110, which are used in the underground gas storage. The theoretical part of this thesis includes an overview of hydrogen absorption, the effects of absorbed hydrogen in the material, as well as the most common test methods for the detection of hydrogen induced embrittlement. The chemomechanical resistance of the steel types L80 and P110 against the attack by gaseous hydrogen was investigated with specific corrosion tests. For this purpose, an experimental plan was established, which enables a differentiation between the effects of hydrogen and other components in the media, whose existence is theoretically possible during the operation of an underground gas storage, on the mechanical properties of the materials. To investigate material embrittlement under a mechanical load, supported by molecular hydrogen and in presence of different aggressive components in the media, slow strain rate tests have been performed. The possibility of a premature failure of the steels, caused by hydrogen gas, has been examined with constant load tests. Fractographic investigations on selected fracture surfaces, as well as the characterization of the microstructures have been carried out with the use of stereo- and scanning electron microscopy. The hydrogen absorption of the tested steel types has been studied by immersion tests in hydrogen gas containing media and the subsequent analysis of the absorbed hydrogen content.
