Abstract

There are several reasons and theories for the climate change. One of them states that increased CO2 emissions are partly responsible. To gain control of this problem, Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) is valued as a key technology in which CO2 of flue gases is removed and is stored permanently. The method for the removal of CO2 from flue gases using a solvent, also called Post-Combustion Capture (PCC), is investigated in this thesis. In order to remove CO2 from large amounts of flue gas, spray scrubbers are required to maintain the efficiency of power plants. To ensure this, separation tests are performed with a three stage spray scrubber. Starting with the wall water tests to classify the used nozzles, a full factorial experimental plan is carried out on the pilot line with the three most important factors of influence, the temperature in the absorber, the loading and the liquid/gas-relation. Based on these results, the parameters will be selectively varied to find an optimal operating point. In addition, the spray scrubber is extended by a bubble column. With this extended pilot plant line separation tests are carried out again. In comparison with a packed column, the achieved separation efficiencies here are less satisfying. This can be attributed to the low height of the spray scrubber.
