Untersuchung der Struktur der österreichischen Rohstoffindustrie mit besonderer Berücksichtigung der Baurohstoffe und Industrieminerale

Research output: ThesisMaster's Thesis

Abstract

The master thesis examines the structure of the Austrian mining industry with the main focus on the sector of industrial and building materials. Thus, it includes information about the different kinds of extracted materials, the magnitude of extraction, the value of extracted materials, the number of mines and quarries, the number of operating mining companies as well as their corresponding ownership structure. Furthermore, the number of employees and their corresponding qualifications have been determined. One of the main tasks of this thesis was to analyse the available data, which informs about the mining industry. Among the studied literature were statistics released by Statistics Austria, the Austrian Ministry of Commerce and further publications by the Forum mineralische Rohstoffe. One of the main findings was, that the production data published by the different institutions can not be compared due to the different inquiry methods. One commonality among all institutional publications is, however, that production data of small scale mining operations are generally not included. To overcome this difficultyan attempt was made to determine the actual production volume of raw materials by analysing the demand of construction materials for the building of infrastructure and the production of goods. Using raw material coefficients as well as the number of civil works, it was hoped to determine the necessary raw materials needed for the built infrastructure and the amount of produced goods. The determination of the quantities of building materials used proved to very time intensive. This together with the low response rate of data requests rendered this approach impractical.Nevertheless, it was possible to estimate the amount of raw materials, which were required for road workings on state roads, lanes and paths for bicycles, for workings on railways and for the production of asphalt, cement and concrete. The required amount of raw materials for workings on other types of roads was only partially calculated due to the missing information about the annual growth rate and the share of roadways, which have to be renovated. However, the raw material coefficients, which inform about the order of magnitude of required materials, were determined successfully from existing literature and primary data. Lastly, one short subchapter is dedicated to recycling and gives a brief insight into the topic and the current situation in Austria. To conclude, the mining industry has to be encouraged to submit their production data to the respective institutions, which are responsible for the compilation of statistics. Obviously this is the only way to get reliable operating data from mining companies. This is important for further elaborations on the total production volume of raw materials.
