Abstract

The recently in Norm EN ISO 1563 in corporated cast irons with higher silicon-content require a detailed investigation regarding the effects of the trace elements. They have on one hand excellent properties, resulting in increasing demand for these ductile grey cast irons and on the other hand those remarkable mechanical properties strongly decrease from approximately 4,3% silicon content. The aim of this work is to investigate, if appropriate alloying elements can be found which have positive impact on the microstructure and the formation of spherolites and their representing number at a high Si content. In addition, the fracture surface of the tensile sample was analyzed to ellucidate fracture behavior. Effective alloying elements were detected, which however should be examined more closely with regard to their quantitative amount needed to obtain optimum properties.
