Abstract

During the continuous casting process, the solidifying steel strand is exposed to complex thermal and mechanical induced stresses and strains that may lead to cracking. The knowledge of the characteristic solidification behaviour, such as the susceptibility for hot tearing, gives information on the castability of various alloys and thus enables a better dimensioning and design of continuous casters. In the present study, the behaviour of Fe-Ni and Fe-Ni-Cr alloys during and immediately after solidification under continuous casting conditions is described for the first time. For this purpose, the differential thermal analysis (DTA), the Submerged Split Chill Tensile tests (SSCT) and Submerged Split Chill Contraction tests (SSCC) were performed. The determined solidus and liquidus temperatures were compared with results from the literature, as well as with results from ThermoCalc calculation. The results of the SSCT and SSCC tests are illustrated and finally compared to prior results from carbon steels. It could be pointed out that under the selected conditions Fe-Ni and Fe-Ni-Cr alloys show similar characteristics and behaviour to steels with higher contend of carbon (for example roller bearing steels).
