Thermodynamic simulation of a heat engine concept for residual heat utilization of thermal power plants

Research output: ThesisMaster's Thesis

Abstract

Thermal power generation accounts for the grand majority of global electricity production. Its energy conversion rates are limited by the laws of thermodynamics, yet no general method of waste heat utilization for steam power plants has established. In this thesis a concept of a heat engine which acts as both power generator and heat sink is proposed and evaluated. A numeric simulation of the thermodynamic system is created and performed with the objective of providing theoretical proof of operability as well as predicting the performance of the proposed device. Parameter influences and physical effects are evaluated. Optimization strategies are derived from the gained insight and applied. Results in form of energetic efficiency rates and quality degrees are presented in dependency on dimensioning variables and are discussed in conclusion.
