Abstract

Recuperative burners in combination with radiant tube technology are frequently used in heat treatment processes in the steel and nonferrous metal industry. Using radiant tubes is essential where the product must not come into contact with the products of combustion. Many radiant tube systems are operating near their application limitations. Therefore, the calibration of radiant tube, burner and combustion control is of crucial importance. A constant temperature and the prevention of hot spots on the radiant tube surface are the determining factors for a long operating life. Additional design criteria low pollutions and efficiency. This master thesis is accomplished in close collaboration with EBNER Industrial Furnaces. In a combustion chamber a double-P radiant tube, heated by a recuperative burner is tested. On different positions on the radiant tube the temperatures are measured with thermocouples. The concentrations of the pollutants in the flue gas are examined with a gas analyzer. An additional task of this work is the development of a calculation method to evaluate the required combustion air and fuel gas pressures. By means of this model the pressure loss at different burner capacities and by firing the burner with natural and coke oven gas are calculated. The results of this work show that the temperature differences on the radiant tube surface and the pollutants, particularly NOx-concentrations, are within the demanded values. The calculated pressure losses are in good correlation with the experimental data.
