Abstract

This master thesis comprises dry processing investigations, using electrostatic separation for two raw talcum samples. Sorting tests for the 500/100µm class are realised at the Hamos free-fall separator of type EMS500. For grain sizes smaller than 100µm, a ST belt separator of type X2 is used. The design of experiments for this master thesis complies with the principles of statistical design of experiments. At the free-fall separator, the influence of ambient temperature and relative humidity on the separation success is analysed. For the tests, a raw talcum with loss-of-ignition of 14.5% is used. These tests show that the separation success improves with a continuous reduction of the relative humidity and the ambient temperature. The belt separator has numerous changeable parameters. Therefore, the optimum machine settings for the sorting tests are determined for both different raw material types at the beginning. Furthermore, the influence of ambient temperature, relative humidity and sample temperature are investigated. An increase of the sample temperature hardly affects the result. For both raw talcum samples, the best sorting results are achieved at high relative humidity and low ambient temperature. The performance of locked cycle tests shows that renewed sorting at the belt separator can reduce talcum losses. These tests are realised with a raw talcum with loss-of-ignition of 22%.
