Abstract

Todays manufacturing industry is challenged by highly volatile markets combined with an increasing need for individualization and speed. In order to stay competitive, a future-oriented manufacturing company needs to timely anticipate to these changes. A significant part of the company's success results from the choice of a suitable production and manufacturing control strategy, which provides opportunities for the enhancment of their logistics target system. In this context both, theoretical concepts and empirical findings have significant shortcomings in consciously applying a sequential combination of production and manufacturing control strategies. The aim of this thesis is the evaluation of cause-effect mechanisms, based on the sequential combination of one or more production and manufacturing control strategies in the area of line production. The focus of this thesis is placed on the sequential combination of the methods MRP, KANBAN and CONWIP. The research design of this work is based on a triangulation of secondary data analysis (desk research) and primary data analysis (questionnaire survey in the empirical environment of Austrian manufacturing companies and simulation using the software Tecnomatix Plant Simulation). The developed simulation model provides an empirically validated basis for the deliberate application of a sequential combination of production and manufacturing control strategies in the industrial environment of line production and highlights potentials for further research projects.
