Abstract
The Montanwerke Brixlegg AG is a secondary copper smelter in Brixlegg in Austria. It is producing very pure (>99,99 % Cu) copper anodes out of secondary material only. The smelter comprises three consecutive kiln processes and each of them requires a different grade of copper in the input material. Main focus of this master thesis is the input material for the first of these three kilns, the shaft kiln. It gets input material with a maximum grade of 50 % copper. Aim is to show methods for physical separation of disruptive materials, which contain elements like chromium, aluminium, iron or plastic material. The method of systematic physical raw materials analysis is adapted to the copper containing secondary materials. Three samples are investigated. It is shown that the reduction of the phases containing the deleterious elements is possible at the expense of high copper losses. The benefit of subsequent processing are discussed.
