Abstract

The aim of this work is the evaluation of the efficiency of protection of steel composites against bullet shots. Therefore, simulations with Abaqus were executed. Furthermore, an evaluation of the influence of the simulation parameters and material parameters on the results was carried out A comparison of simulations with the complex real projectile and the steel core only was also part of this study. To validate the simulation results, a comparison with simulation results of different studies has been performed. The steel composites consist of Secure 500, Weldox 460 E and HF Stahl. Secure 500 and Weldox 460 E are commercially available. HF Stahl is a theoretical material model with high hardness values, which has been generated to evaluate the influence of different sheet properties in the composite. It could be shown, that loose steel composites tend to have a negative impact on the penetration depth. Furthermore, the simulation results proved that the sequence of firmly connected hard and soft steel in the composite arrangement does not have a strong influence on the results. For steel composites consisting of four layers, the combination Weldox 460 E/HF Stahl/HF Stahl/Weldox 460 E provides the best results regarding residual velocity of the bullet.
