Abstract

Solid Recovered Fuels (SRF) are waste that is used entirely or to a relevant extent for the purpose of energy generation which satisfies the quality criteria laid down in legal regulations. Utilization of SRF in the Austrian cement industry has become “State of the Art”, which is confirmed by the high thermal substitution rate of about 72% in 2013. Caused by constantly increasing primary fuel prices and the import dependency of Austria (in the present case hard coal, brown coal and petroleum coke are considered), on-the-spot waste management offers various benefits when raw materials and fuels produced out of waste are considered. These and other benefits and/or improvement suggestions should be elaborated in the present Thesis, as mentioned below. The goal of the present Master Thesis is to analyse and describe the methods used as well as the evaluation of the SRF-System in Austria (starting from waste processing and production of SRF all the way up to usage of SRF in cement industry) by employing plant- and material specific indicators. For that purpose, indicators like “net energy value”, “greenhouse gas effect”, “heavy metals”, “material recycling” and “biogenic proportion” have been selected. Results gained from the investigations should give information on exact definition, quantification and evaluation of the resource as well as energy, environment and quality related technical aspects when SRF are produced and recovered in cement industry compared to traditional cement production based on fossil fuels only (i.e. reference scenario). Finally, a uniform and plant specific REUQ-Benchmark for SRF which depicts technical weaknesses and suggestions for changes and improvements of SRF production plant or even the whole SRF management system should be developed.
