Abstract

This thesis is focused on ultramafic rocks in Austria. It discusses the topics availability of resources, mining characterization and utilization potential of ultramafic rocks as well as mine planning concepts for selected occurrences. The first part of the thesis defines the ultramafic rocks and their utilization potential. The ultramafic rocks are interesting, because the major part of it consists of magnesium silicate, with fractions of iron and nickel. Chromium is present in oxide form as chromite. These resources can be yielded by using hydrometallurgy. The contained magnesium can be used to bind CO2 into synthetic magnesium carbonate. The ultramafic rocks are exploited for aggregates for road and rail tracks and as cut stone. The main part surveys the resource availability of Austria, 35 occurrences could be found. The five deposits with the largest surface dimensions are Kraubath 28 km², Bernstein 10 km², Hochgrößen 5 km², Badersdorf 5 km² and Pernegg 5 km². Defined mining parameters were used for the selection of the two most promising occurrence, Bernstein and Kraubath, for an exact mining characterization. It shows that Kraubath is favored because it has better grades, good infrastructure and larger proportions. The final part of the paper deals with the "Mine to Mill concept". The mining project planning concept shows the steps which are important to realise a mining project. A containment of the mining methods is carried out for the selected occurrence. The cost analysis shows that the costs for exploration, mining, logistics and milling, in operation scenarios between 500,000 t/a, 1,000,000 t/a and 5,000,000 t/a, varies between 17 €/t to 10 €/t. "Target Costing" identifies possible adjusting keys for cost reduction. In conclusion the legal framework is discussed.
