Abstract

Major losses are caused by setting-up times in production processes resulting in a decrease of productivity. A new rolling mill is going to be implemented at the rail plant of voestalpine Schienen GmbH, which will realize setting-up times of 30 minutes only. To rise the productivity of the total process, setting-up times up to 30 minutes have to be achieved at each downstream production unit. At the first part of the thesis, a summery is given of the theoretical aspects of Systems Engineering, Asset Management, Total Productive Maintenance and reduction of setting-up times. A project is described in the empirical section which has the aim to reduce setting-up times of the test benches used for non-destructive material testing. Several different ways should be found to increase efficiency by involving the staff constantly in the improvement process. The methodical approach chosen is a problem-solving-cycle. In this thesis the project phases are described in detail, from data collection and data analysis to the solutions founded and finally to the implementation of and check on the achieved improvements. Information is given on the quality management instruments used in each project phase and a list of all technical and organisational measures is included. Due to this thesis, setting-up times of test benches could be decreased by 35 % approximately. The systematic approach and the strong participation of all employees were very important for the success of the project.
