Abstract

The purpose of this master thesis is to evaluate and simulate methods for a fast manufacturing of forging dies and to validate the obtained results in a real forging process. Therefore rapid tooling processes will be considered, especially the Laminate Object Manufacturing (LOM) procedure. This should reduce the required time to produce the first die forged prototypes and increase flexibility in finding the best die geometry. The reason for choosing these laminating processes is that in the production of die forgings, some prototypes have to be manufactured in advance to the serial production. Prototyping of these forging dies with usual production methods and the hard acquisition of expensive hot-forming steel lead to high production costs and also a huge time consumtion. Since these initial die prototypes are only used to produce a small number of units, the mechanical and thermal requirements are comparatively low. Therefore, the above-mentioned LOM procedure and cheaper, easier accessible steels can be used for the prototype dies. In addition, the RP methods can also be considered for faster and cheaper production of small batches of workpieces having mechanic properties of forging.
