Pyrometallurgisches Recycling von Aktivmaterial aus der Aufbereitung von Lithium-Ionen-Batterien in einem induktiv beheizten Schüttschichtreaktor

Research output: ThesisMaster's Thesis

Abstract

The issues global warming and reduction of CO2 emissions are more topical than ever. Electric drives are currently regarded as key technologies in the transportation sector. The energy storage units required for their wide-spread application are based on the principle of lithium ions and contain other valuable metals that are classified as critical raw materials. In order to close the product cycle, the development of efficient and economical recycling methods is the subject of research. The aim of this work is to determine the suitability of an inductively heated packed-bed reactor for the recovery of all valuable metals from lithium-ion batteries developed at the Chair of Thermal Processing Technology at the Montanuniversitaet Leoben. For this purpose, an experiment with the active material of the lithium-ion batteries in batch operation was carried out in the so-called InduMelt plant, in the course of which a promising result could be generated. A possibility of recovering lithium via the gas phase, as well as the remaining metals in the form of an alloy, could be derived by means of this pyrometallurgical process. In order to modify the active material and to adapt it to the reactor concept of continuous operation, several experiments were carried out using a heating microscope. Thereby, knowledge for further process development could be gained. It can be deduced from the experiments that appropriate pretreatment steps and additives are necessary for the complete conversion of the active material into the liquid state after removal of gasified compounds.
