Abstract

This thesis is carried out as part of the CASCADE - project. The goal of this multidisciplinary project is the development of a cascading geothermal heat utilization concept within both industrial and public sectors. Two industrial partners (one dairy company in Gmunden and one brewery in Hofstetten) and two district heating communities (Gmunden and Steyr) joined this endeavour to set an international milestone on the path towards climate neutrality. Within this project the vast opportunities of geothermal energy (from both deep and shallow sources) for heating, cooling and power generation will be scaled for industrial and public use.
A crucial part for designing such a system lies in the creation of a temporal thermal demand scheme for the industrial and public project partners. Therefore, the present thesis will focus on the compilation and measurement of data to create a spatial and temporal resolved heat demand of the dairy company. A multidisciplinary approach is not only used to create these demand curves, but it is also used to depict possible excess heat potentials within the company. Several improvements with regards to energy efficiency will also be proposed by comparing the company´s current process status to the latest national and international technologies of dairy companies.
The analysis clearly depicted that certain production processes would be suitable for the use of geothermal energy. The geothermal potentials were separated by their maximum temperature level, with 100 °C being used as the limit for classification. This boundary will allow for an easier classification of the required geothermal sources.
Next to creating heat demand curves, different excess heat potentials were identified. Moreover, improvements for the increase of the overall energy efficiency for two production processes were pointed out.
The outcomes of the thesis are displayed to be directly used for the techno-economical assessment of potential geothermal sources, in order to contribute to the decarbonization of industrial heat supply.
