Abstract

For the optimization of energy and material efficiency in an Austrian textile industry site production integrated optimisation possibilities were analysed. The calculation of material and energy balances shows especially for the stenters, the boiler house and the washing system large saving potentials. Improved regulation of the air circulation in the stenters, optimised boiler house management and an efficient heat recovery through waste water heat exchangers can save 159.000 /a. The additionally used environmental management accounting shows the financial importance of the non product outputs of which waste has the largest cost share with 43% of the environmental costs next to water (36%) and energy (21%). The second part of the study analyses the possibilities to treat waste water by membranes. Treatment by ultrafiltration and nanofiltration achieve a reduction in COD of 55-86%, with permeat fluxes below 12 (l/h)/mbar. Treated water is still loaded with 10% of (non ionic) detergents and not fully desalinated. Due to this fact only the use as wash water is possible and detergents can be recovered at the same time. However, further tests are necessary to ensure the recovery and activity of detergents. It is shown that a combined process of ultrafiltration treating the water for washing purposes and reverse osmosis or a suitable nanofiltration treating water further for rinsing purposes can achieve savings of up to 91.000 /a.
