Abstract

Polyamide (PA) films are widely used as surface films of modern skis. The overall objective of this master thesis was to investigate the effect of coupling agent type and concentration as well as of post processing on the morphology, the optical properties, and the adhesive strength of PA films. For the analysis an impact modified PA type was used. Two different types of coupling agents were selected. The coupling agent was added to the PA in concentrations of 1, 2,5, 5 and 7,5w%. Film extrusion was done both, on an extrusion line equipped with an optical calendar and on a cast film line. After extrusion the films were post processed by surface activation, sublimation, screen printing and conglutination for adhesion testing. Film thickness was 550µm. A comprehensive analysis of film morphology was carried out using light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. The films were analyzed as to their optical properties with an Abbè refractometer and a spectrophotometer. The characterization of adhesive properties was done applying the floating roller peel test according to EN1464. A significant effect of coupling agent type and of post processing on the morphology and the optical properties of the films was detected. Surface activation yielded films with lower surface roughness compared to extruded films. However, melting enthalpy and optical properties were not affected by surface activation. Sublimation yielded a significant increase of surface roughness and of melting enthalpy. As a result the light transmittance of the samples decreased considerably. Moreover an increase of haze was ascertained after sublimation. The refractive index of the coupling agent was found to significantly affect the light transmittance of the films. However, only a slight effect on haze was ascertained. Independent on coupling agent concentration no adhesion to the ski was achieved with extruded films. After surface activation a significant improvement of adhesive strength was observed. In general, an increase of adhesive strength with increasing concentration of the coupling agent was detected. Nevertheless, this effect was ascertained merely for one of the two investigated coupling agents. Morphological investigations revealed that this can be attributed to differences in size and adhesion of the different coupling agents within the film matrix.
