Abstract
Internal recycling of residual materials from industrial production is considered essential to foster a circular economy. Agglomeration of metal powders to form briquettes is carried out prior to their reuse as residual material in induction furnaces. The compact must withstand transport and charging processes to ensure inductive coupling. For compacting in a briquette press, the process parameters that influence the quality of the compacts can be optimized. Determining the optimum parameter settings for the briquetting process defines the core objective of this work. Systematic investigations using ultrasonic as well as compression tests and determination of the crushability in a Los Angeles testing machine were used to analyze the properties of the briquettes in more detail. From this, improvements could be implemented regarding compaction pressure, cycle time and lubricant quantity. Furthermore, the melting behavior of the briquettes was investigated in a melting test compared with a conventionally used starting material block. It was found that the briquette charge has a 37.5 % shorter time for melting with the same power requirement.
