Abstract

Jakomini-Quarry in Bleiberg-Kreuth produces and material about 650000 tons of hard rock gravel products per year. Most of this is produced through drilling and blasting. The material is then loaded and hauled by a hydraulic excavator and dumpers. To substitute the hydraulic excavator by a front end wheel loader in the future amongst others smooth bench level after blasting and a more, finer particle size of the blasted material is needed. To meet these requirements a possible design of blasting in the quarry was developed and blast tests were executed. In detail the use of toe-holes has been avoided and the formerly applied quite expensive pre-split-technique that was needed to keep the benches in a stable condition has been abondoned. “Air decks” in the bottom of the boreholes were used during two tests and the subgrade was reduced by the use of this technique. The blasts were designed after surveying the bench face and the borehole-geometry by using MDL’s Boretrak-System. The costs drilling, blasting and loading were documented in detail. In compansion to the current drilling and blast procedures a cost reduction could be achieved.
