Abstract

Due to the increasing demands of the steelmaking industry in terms of effectiveness, efficiency and environmental sustainability, alternative process routes were developed for ironmaking and put into operation in recent years. Some methods use the fluidized bed technology, because this technology provides several advantages during the process. For the development of such technologies, which reduce fine iron ores, lab facilities are installed at the Chair of Ferrous Metallurgy (MU Leoben). For this thesis, experiments with a fluidized bed reactor in laboratory scale (diameter of grid below the fluidized bed = 68 mm) were carried out. To get the correct test parameters for achieving a specific final reduction degree, some different models for the demonstration of the fluidized bed have been investigated. The final reduction degree should be equal to that reached by an industrial plant. Based on the newly developed experimental conditions different types of iron ore can be tested in the laboratory facility to make first statements about the behavior of the ore in the fluidized bed. With the help of the gas concentration profile, which have been derived from the fluidized bed model, it was possible to define a new standard test. The conditions of the height z = 2/3*H of the industrial reactor led out to the desired target reduction degree of 62%.
