Abstract
Deposits and contaminations which appear on wire surfaces during different steps of production require surface cleaning before any further treatment. One of the most widely used chemical cleaning processes is the pickling of the wire surfaces by hydrochloric acid. Concentration of free acid and iron content of the pickling liquor are the most important parameters during control of the pickling process. The results of pickling have a relevant influence on the quality of the finished product. Furthermore, monitoring is needed for a smoothly running process. In this thesis a newly installed inline-measurement device in an industrial pickling plant is monitored to determine the feasibility in control of the pickling process. To achieve this goal different kinds of titration analyses were carried out manually as well as in semi-automatic mode, considering the above-mentioned parameters concentration of free acid and iron. The operation experiance during the first few months of the inline-measurement device¿s running time as well as the results from the different titration analyses lead to the conclusion that there is a positive influence on the quality of the wire surface and on the pickling process itself. Additionally, further potential for improvement concerning the location of installation and the setting parameters of the inline-measurement device could be identified.
