Abstract
The electronic waste stream is one of the fastest growing waste streams in the world. Per year it is estimated, that around 40 million tons of e-waste arise, but only one sixth of this stream is dealt with properly. According to the waste economy plan 2017 of the Austrian federation the collected amount of e-waste in Austria makes up 80.200 tons. Due to this amount and the materials that occur in this mass stream, the importance of the e-waste stream is rising. To recycle e-waste in Austria, there is a well working system, that includes the legal frame conditions as well as the treatment. Due to a variety of different products, materials and structures the optimum of this system is not yet accomplished. To identify the legal situation and the requirements of this topic, the first part of the master thesis contains the regulatory framework for small electrical and electronic equipment as well as the ecodesign regulations. The following practical part is divided into two topics. The first part contains the methods and results of the collection, seperation and dismantlement of small electrical and electronic equipment. The goal of the first part will be the determination of the battery fraction in the small electrical and electronic equipment fraction, as well as the dismantlement effort, the condition and the battery type. The second part will be about ecodesign and the awareness and recommendations to implicate some improvements for the product, like an easy dismantlement, as well as an efficient and environmentally acceptable production and recycling. In consideration of the joining technology, the dismantlement of overall 65 different mobile phones was carried out. The results of the dismantlement were used to give some suggestions and changes for future products. The goal of this master thesis is to provide an overview of waste small electrical and electronic equipment and observe the challenges for the future recycling in detail.
