Abstract

Solder-coated copper strips are required for the production of solar modules for contacting the solar cells and their connection among themselves. Up to now, a tin-lead solder was used. Due to the EC Directive 2002/95/EC on the Restriction of the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment (RoHS) a substitution of lead containing solders was essential. This work deals with the feasibility of alternative lead free alloys and the procedure of surfaces coating. To determine a suitable solder, an investigation of the alloys known from the literature, regarding to coatability and final application was done. A continuous tinning facility with integrated heat treatment of the hard-rolled copper strips was provided by the company Gebauer & Griller Metallwerk GmbH. The analysis of the coating process occurred in two steps. On the one hand, all important factors for the heat treatment were identified and examined. So a low level of the yield strength could be adjusted. On the other hand, fundamental effects of the process on the thickness, the appearance and some other characteristics of the coating, were determined.
