Abstract

After comparatively run crushing tests to liberate silica-bearing minerals in dispatch ore, different sorting methods were tested. On the one hand, this work serves the continuing quality improvements of the ore concentrate to reach the growing requirements of steel plants. On the other hand, it clarifies whether the required quality, for the use in hydrogen direct reduction process, can be reached. The crushing tests to 100% -100 µm include the energy optimized single particle comminution according to the “OCS” method, respectively particle bed load in a roller mill. On the comminution products, the characteristic values for liberation are elaborated by means of property analysis and additionally characteristics for the energy consumption are derived. The sorting tests comprise experimental investigations for the physical separation in dry and wet procedure for grain sizes smaller than 100 µm. The focus is put on decreasing the silica content from roughly 6 % to below 1 %. Consequently, the efficiency limit of electrostatic separation and flotation is demonstrated.
