Abstract

The present work deals with the design of a chemical absorption plant for the targeted separation of carbon dioxide (CO2) from the process gases of the refractory production at the RHI Magnesita site in Breitenau. The focus was on the flue gases of the long rotary kiln. In a first step, a comprehensive literature search was conducted to determine state of the art technol-ogies for the capture of CO2 from flue gases. In addition, different chemical, physical and biological applications for the utilization of CO2 were evaluated. In the second step, a chemical absorption system was modelled and economically evaluated. The target value of the simulation was a 90% separation of CO2 from the process gases using a 30%wt-MEA solution in water as solvent. The calculations revealed the energy and solvent requirements, the consumptions of cooling water and operating materials as well as the design dimensions. Based on Chilton factors, the investment costs of the overall chemical absorption plant and the operating costs werde determined. The total costs for CO2-separation are in a range from 50 to 85 € per ton of captured CO2, depending on assumptions like depreciation periods, excess heat utilisation and CO2-concentration.
