Abstract

The European energy sector has changed radically since the end of the 1990s. Various political and social decisions, the goal to reduce CO2 emissions, and the expansion of renewable energy sources are all factors that increase the burden on power grids. Renewable energy sources may be unreliable, as production intensity depends on site location and time. Various measures may be implemented to manage the volatility that this introduces into power grids. Some possible solutions are the expansion of energy storages as well as the development of hybrid grids, which incorporate electricity, heat and gas sources in order to profit from the individual advantages of each energy source. This master’s thesis develops a simulation model in MATLAB® with focus on electricity. Additional applications for energy storages are derived from the simulation results of a defined scenario. A literature study of potential storage services was conducted to produce a working definition for energy storage services. The market for operating reserve – currently the only accessible market for storage services – was also analysed and theoretical fundamentals for the model are elaborated. The structuring and interlinking of cells is based on the cellular approach. For each cell in the lower level, residual loads and energy storages for electricity, heat and gas as well as one hybrid element can be defined. A scenario based on the city of Leoben was calculated with the developed model. The calculation produced a time-dependent energy storage level over a one-year period. The results were used to investigate if energy storage could be used for infrastructure relief, arbitrage, or as operating reserve. The results show that all mentioned storage services may be provided. However, there are limitations due to scenario restrictions like insufficient storage capacity. Furthermore, until now there has been hardly any business model, nor necessary control technology has been implemented for energy storage services in Austria or Germany.
