Abstract

The primary scope of this work was to develop a method for risk assessment focused on forming operations. For that purpose the failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) was modified to make a quantitative determination of risks possible. Mathematical description of risk information offers the possibility to use data from usual management tools for efficiency- and productivity-evaluation. Applying the method enables a risk assessment starting in the beginning of manufacturing process leading up to the application of end customer. To set a benchmark for results of risk evaluation focused on the manufacturing process the market attractiveness of produced goods has to be considered. The chances of products on different markets are described by quality attributes based on technical standards which are necessary for customer satisfaction. Chances of a product are always linked to dangers in fact of non-fulfillment of central end product functions. So it is possible to determine out of the malfunction of the end product in a first step the lack in quality and in a second step the associated cause focused on the manufacturing process. To show the possibilities of application for the risk based tool an implementation in an Enterprise-Risk-Management-System (ERM) is presented. The main difference to other risk based management systems is illustrated by a closed loop cycle from top- to low-level of company organization structure. This circuit demonstrates a companywide Plan-Do-Check-Act-Cycle (PDCA). For practical application of the developed method for risk assessment a manufacturing process of seam welded stainless steel tubes was analyzed. So it was possible to identify interesting market segments for used production technology. Further technical and economical borders could pointed out.
