Abstract
The Discrete Element Simulation is a method that is becoming increasingly established in addition to the conventional mechanics of bulk materials in the field of materials handling. In the design of materials handling equipment, the simulation can help to avoid design flaws at an early stage. In Discrete Element Simulation, the bulk material is not considered as a continuum, as by the conventional mechanics of bulk materials, but as a great number of individual particles. Every contact between the particles is calculated individually. For calculation a set of parameters is needed, which is used to describe the physical conditions at the contact point. It is theoretically possible, with precise knowledge of all the parameters, to reproduce realistic bulk behavior, but not practically because of the required computing power. The best achievable result is therefore a compromise between realism and computation time. To identify the individual influence of the parameters, a parametric analysis using the simulation program EDEM was conducted. The result of this analysis is that the quality of the simulation can be best influenced by the parameters damping, static coefficient of friction and cohesion. Based on this result two test rigs, using different measuring principles, were developed to measure said parameters. In the development of the test rigs additional attention was paid to small size and light weight, to move them if necessary. A portable measuring system offers the advantage of on-site measurement, without having to carry a bulk material sample to the location of the test rig. The transport of a bulk material sample may be difficult due to export regulations.
