Abstract

In times of intense competition and the need for operational efficiency, optimizing intra-company logistics processes poses a crucial challenge for industrial enterprises. This work examines the potential enhancement of productivity in intra-company material transport by forklifts through the implementation of a forklift guidance system. The primary objective of this work is to determine the theoretical impact of a forklift guidance system on the productivity of intra-company material transport, based on a case study. To achieve this, forklift guidance systems are comprehensively investigated, including the current state of technology, their functions, and benefits. A key focus lies in describing the associated optimization problems and potential solution methods, considering system-related constraints. The potential benefits of a forklift guidance system are empirically examined by modeling, validating, and verifying a real company's material flow system in a simulation model. Subsequently, selected solution methods for the combined assignment and sequencing problem of a forklift guidance system are implemented, tested in the simulation model, and compared to the current state of the considered company.
