Abstract

There is a high economic potential for savings due to the use of polymer structural components and therefore the substitution rate of metallic components is constantly increasing. In the automotive sector in particular, the use of plastic components leads to enormous savings in terms of structural lightweight design which results in reduced fuel consumption. The group of short-fibre-reinforced semi-crystalline thermoplastics is used as starting material for the production of structural elements in motor vehicle engine compartments. In this work, a plastic gear wheel of PPA-CF30 is analysed in relation to life-influencing variables such as temperature, fibre orientations, notch effect, etc.. To do this, quasistatic and high-cycle-fatigue experiments were carried out on test specimens with different geometries and component tests. By carrying out a numerical simulation of the test specimens it was possible to determine the life time and the component damage on the gearwheel in conjunction with the experimentally determined variables and the models derived from them. Finally, the component’s S/N curves were compared with the numerical results and discussed.
