Landfill Mining - Entwicklung und Simulation einer mobilen Aufbereitungsanlage zur Gewinnung potentieller Sekundärrohstoffe

Research output: ThesisMaster's Thesis

Abstract

Because of the increasing demand for resources and secondary raw materials a scarcity of certain raw materials can be observes globally. This development implicates high competitive markets and rising prices correspondingly. Therefore, due to their secondary raw material potential, anthropogenic deposits (Urban Mining) become more interesting for science and industry. One branch of Urban Mining is Landfill Mining, in which deposited waste is excavated and treated to obtain a possily high amount of material or energy recoverable materials. This master thesis describes the basics of Landfill Mining and the individual steps of a Landfill Mining project. This includes the preliminary study, the individual deconstruction techniques, the safety and health protection measures and the treatment of excavated waste. In addition, the advantages and disadvantages of a landfill deconstruction are considered and the material and energy potential of existing landfills is evaluated. The economic viability of a Landfill Mining project is analysed by means of a rough comparison of possible costs and expected proceeds and cost savings. Furthermore the practical experiences of employees, who were involved in Landfill Mining projects, were collected through a questionnaire. Based on the results from the questionnaires and the literature review, a simulation model for Landfill Mining projects was developed in cooperation with the Chair of Waste Processing Technology and Waste Management and industrial and municipal partners. This model shall provide a calculation of deconstruction and treatment costs as well an estimation of the gained amount of potential secondary raw materials as a function of different operation, excavation and treatment methods. Referring to an example the model will be described closely in this master thesis.
