Abstract

The target of this thesis is to increase the transparency of the current situation in a manual respectively fully automated warehouse in the run-up phase regarding to performance, quality, stock and service. Therefore the thesis deals with different suggestions for action based on an analysis of the processes in a warehouse and in conjunction with key performance indicators (KPIs) for the assessment of the current situation. The objective is to reach the strived setpoints. These aspects were developed scientifically by research questions. The questions are clarified on the basis of a scientifically sound literature research. The investigation covers the project phases of an implementation of a warehouse management system as well as the intralogistics processes and the identification of the performance of a logistics system. In addition, the influence of the order structure on the intralogistics KPIs is emphasized. Lessons learned are subsequently applied to classify a warehouse regarding to its order structure. This classification is the decision-making basis for the deployment of particular KPIs witch could be used for assessing the run up phase of a warehouse. Depending on the complexity of the order structure in a stock the current situation can be categorized in a best, average or worst cases. According to this, three frameworks of KPIs are developed. That implies that the current situation of a warehouse can be evaluated rapidly. This assessment contributes to recognize deviations to determined setpoints. Subsequently, the identified differences are compromised with compiled strategies and potential for improvements. This thesis examines among others strategies of rotation, storage assignments and control in a warehouse with the aim to increase the performance and the quality. The results of the thesis are a KPI cockpit which can be implemented in a warehouse management system, and also an analysis of the room for improvement which affects a positive increase of the particular KPIs areas.
