Abstract

The aim of this work is the conception and implementation of a measurement system which can determine the forces working on a tunnel-formwork due to the pressure in the supported concrete. By determining the forces it will be possible to protect the framework against overload and the associated possible damage. The complex properties of the different types of concrete used, precluded the use of simple estimation techniques. Consequently, new concepts and sensor implementations had to be developed, which enable the direct measurement of the local concrete pressure on the outer shin of the formwork. The total load on the structure can be determined form the measurement pressure. The conditions associated with the measurement, in particular the aggressive nature of the concrete, necessitates the development of dedicated sensors. The sensors were designed, implemented and successfully tested. A special formwork was also designed, and is now in construction, which will serve as a test-bed for the complete measurement system. The test-formwork will enable the production of concrete casings under controlled conditions and with this the verification of the system concept.
