Abstract

Companies are increasingly confronted with global competition, mass markets and short product life cycles. As a result of these more intense competitive situations and the growing complexity regarding flexibility, companies must optimize their information flow accordingly. Therefore, the voestalpine Metal Engineering Division will also concentrate on their information flows in order to optimize the production planning processes by improving these flows. For this reason, this master thesis will focus on the topic of information management and describe its influence on the supply chain. Information is required for the daily operations of all supply chain members and it provides the basis for connecting the individual supply chain partners. As a result, information enables the coordination and maximization of the profitability of the entire supply chain. Furthermore, this master thesis describes information technology systems and the influence of digitalization on information management. Besides the theoretical content on information management, another part of this master thesis concerns production planning in the process industry. For this purpose, the characteristics of the process industry are distinguished, and the tasks of production planning are defined and described in detail. The theoretical part of this master thesis on information management and production planning forms the basis for the practical case study which was carried out for the voestalpine Metal Engineering Division, which is part of the steel company voestalpine group. In this case study, the information flows and the production planning processes of three rolling mills and the steel mill of the voestalpine Metal Engineering Division are described and analysed. In addition, possible optimization potentials are derived in order to improve the process of exchanging information between the three rolling mills and the steel mill of the voestalpine Metal Engineering Division and to achieve improvements for the production planning processes in the steel mill. The identified optimization potentials are evaluated according to their complexity and their benefits and based on the results of this evaluation a recommendation for action is given.
