Abstract
Ecotoxicological tests represent an analytically important tool for the assessment of potential risks emerging of liquid and solid wastes. For this master thesis a literature survey was carried out in order to determine the range of existing ecotoxicological test methods for different environmentally relevant matrices. These methods were evaluated according to their practical applicability at the Chair of Waste Processing Technology and Waste Management under the employment of currently available means. Hereby, the acute toxicity test for the determination of the inhibition of the mobility of Daphnia magna Straus according to ISO 6341 was implemented and validated. The toxicity test was conducted on the one hand following the instructions stated in the standard procedure, on the other hand according to a commercially available test kit. Besides potassium dichromate, the substance which served as reference material, experiments with ultrapure water, tap water and surface water were part of the thesis’ practical experiments. Furthermore, leachates in compliance with the European Standard EN 14735 of several solid wastes were created and likewise tested upon their toxicity. These materials comprised metal-depleted active material of batteries, mechanically pre-treated electronical and electric waste as well as a soil sample. In order to gain a more detailed image of the composition of the samples, the leachates were characterised by analytical methods. The results obtained with the toxicity tests were highly in accordance with the expected outcomes – both for the method corresponding to the standard procedure and the test kit. In case of potassium dichromate the desired value for the EC50 of 1.3 mg/L was obtained. The leachate of the batteries' active material was additionally analysed by another laboratory for comparative purposes. The results obtained within the thesis showed good accordance with those acquired in the reference laboratory.
