Abstract

Frohnleiten Mill is the parent plant of Mayr-Melnhof Karton, and is one of the biggest production sites for folding box carton board on recycled fibre basis. A majority of its production is converted into packaging boxes for food. The mill is certified to ISO 9001 and the hygienic standards EN 15593 / HACCP as well as Halal / ONR 142000:2009. In June 2014 a major rebuild took place in hygienic production facilities of the mill, with the purpose of technical modernisation of a converting machine (Sheeter 2). Experiences from previous comparable projects showed a significant risk to hygienic production caused by such rebuild works. The upcoming rebuild was used as a pilot to execute a systematic risk analysis for such a project for the very first time, only within a couple of days before start of the rebuild. Guiding measures were defined and implemented in project planning to manage identified risks. To sum up, risk management for this rebuild was very successful – in spite of development on very short notice, risk analysis showed a very positive effect on hygienic production. For sustainable preservation of this way of proceeding several standard documents were issued and implemented into the existing quality management system. This short term proceeding was evaluated in hindsight on demands from relevant standards and statutes regarding asset management in hygienic production sites. At the same time this proceeding was also evaluated on practical aspects by a best-practice-benchmark with several producing companies from different branches. Besides some in-house improvements to this risk management systematic took place. These validation processes resulted in a gap-analysis from theoretical and from practical sight. Found improvements were implemented as far as present capacities allowed, or at least, were planned for future. Finally at the end of this thesis present hygienic management system regarding asset management at Frohnleiten Mill was summarised. A modern holistic view on maintenance-organisations was the basis for this part of the paper. In total, a full PDCA-cycle was run within this work. Furthermore improvements for present system topography were showed, especially regarding the integration of management systems for quality and hygiene.
