Abstract

The present work deals with the hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) of different biogenic residues. On the basis of the results of previous work on the HTL of microalgae biomass, fundamental investigations with other organic residues are carried out. The suitability of biogenic residues such as sewage sludge or food waste as individual raw materials or in mixtures with microalgae for hydrothermal liquefaction is investigated. In addition, the produced biocrude is examined qualitatively concerning its use as a drop-in product in existing refineries. All experiments were carried out in a high pressure autoclave at temperatures around 350°C and a holding time of 15 minutes in a nitrogen-atmosphere. For the experiments, mass balances were evaluated to determine the biocrude-, gas-, solid- and water-yields. The gas composition was measured by FTIR spectrometry. The calorific value and the elemental composition of the resulting biocrudes from the experiments were analyzed. The following average yields of biocrude could be achieved in the individual experiments: green waste – 4.45%; Sewage sludge 1 – 6.11%; Sewage sludge 2 – 11.96%; Food Leftovers – 18.21%; Grease separator – 76.26%. The average calorific value was 33.01 MJ/kg. The mix trials, which were carried out in a 50:50-ratio, only slightly affected the biocrude-yield but increased the calorific value and hydrogen content and lowered the content of oxygen in the biocrude.
