Abstract

In the following work, various carrier materials for the production of color masterbatches and the production of various products with polyethylene terephthalate, PET, as the base material were examined with the color masterbatches. Color masterbatches refer to the composition of polymers with color pigments that contain a higher percentage of pigments as usual. The advantage of these color masterbatches is the avoidance of various processing errors during product manufacture due to the different material forms and different processing conditions. This means that a pigment in powder form is mixed with a polymer during the masterbatch production and two granulates are mixed during the product manufacturing. First, an alternative production method to compounding was investigated. The production on the kneader is discontinuous and has a greater influence on the materials, which is why the materials were processed on the continuous compounder in the ongoing investigations and the alternative production method was disregarded. For the masterbatches, the possible carrier materials were first processed on the compounder without pigment and then with the addition of the various pigments. rheological measurements were then carried out to compare the possible carrier materials with the PET. On the other hand, thermogravimetric analysis of the masterbatches were carried out to investigate the composition of polymer and pigment. In the next step, the products were produced with the addition of the manufactured masterbatches, and the viscosity of the products was measured. Based on these results, it was already possible to make some statements regarding the possible carrier materials. In addition, films were also produced on the laboratory extruder so that they could be visually assessed, and their results included in the evaluation. Through these investigations, possible carrier materials for the production of colored PET products were found. The work also revealed that the base material cannot necessarily be used as a carrier material.
