Abstract
The present master’s thesis provides a contribution to the field of Resin Transfer Moulding (RTM). It introduces to the subject following the process chain of RTM and gives insights on the requirements for successful processing. Initially, the demands on the mould technology are considered. Further, technical relevant fibre reinforcements, the preforming step and commonly used resin materials are discussed. Besides illuminating the flow phenomena during resin injection, the curing and ultimately the demoulding of the final part are dealt with. The performed, practical experiments focus on the commissioning of a 2-component resin mixing and dosing machine as well as on the development of a RTM process routine for a complex shaped part. The findings of a draping study and observations on the used release agents are presented. Moreover, the influences of the fibre reinforcement, the resin through-put, the set pressure limit, the applied vacuum and the resin temperature at injection are illustrated and discussed in detail. The drawn conclusions are successfully used for process parameter optimisation. Additionally an evaluation procedure to quantify the part quality is introduced and the observed trends of part quality throughout the experimental series are dis-cussed. Concluding a code of best practice for determination of optimised process parameters is proposed.
