Abstract
The Diploma-thesis “GIS-based Assessment of traffic-caused Risks of groundwater-pollution in the south Wittingauer Becken / Gmündner Bucht region” is focused on developing and testing of a GIS-procedures to identify and assess local risks.
The thesis is considering the background of Risk Management, in detail the Risk Analysis with its basic elements Risk Identification, Risk Assessment and also Decisionmaking under risk. The use of Riskanalysis in environmental problems needs specific features since possible interactions within natural systems generally can not be fully investigated. Therefore such processes of decisionmaking are connected with an unavoidable part of uncertainty. Based on the method of ecological Risk Analysis, which is the most common method in environmental management, a semi-hypothetical case study for identification and estimation of potential dangerous traffic caused facts for the groundwater is developed.
The database for this study consists of information layers on geological, hydro-geological, environmental-geological and on traffic related data. To quantify the impact-factors a scheme of scoring is used. The estimation of the potential impact on groundwater is made by local-overlays of the different informationlayers in a particular sequence of calculation. The extracted results are used to give proposals for general actions. Critical areas are treated additionally.
With this procedure, performed with a Geo-Information-System, it is possible to identify and classify the areas of possible groundwater-pollution. The case shows that on eventually accidents in road-transportation of hazardous goods approximately 5,15% of the entire traffic-net have a high risk potential and 27,17% a medium risk potential for the groundwater and the drinking-water-supply.
