Abstract
Geotechnical investigations are of crucial importance for the planning of any subsurface infrastructure project. In the case of sustainable planning, the results of geotechnical investigations are also used for the consideration of different recycling potentials of the excavated tunnel material. In this context, it is important to characterize the geotechnical properties and behaviour of the excavated material before the start of construction in order to determine the technical standards of the material. With regard of the planned construction of the Future Circular Collider (FCC) by the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) near the Swiss city of Geneva, geotechnical investigations were carried out on samples of the Western Alpine Molasse Basin. The objective is to manage the excavated material as sustainably as possible, thereby significantly reducing the environmental impact of the construction process. In this thesis the results of the geotechnical investigations are explained and the suitability for use in different applications, such as the production of building materials (e.g. concrete), is discussed. The proposed uses of the heterogeneous molasse material can serve as a basis for future projects in the western alpine molasse zone as well as in other regions with similar geology. Overall, the work emphasizes the importance of conducting detailed geotechnical investigations prior to any construction project to ensure safe and efficient use of the materials in reuse.
