Abstract

Pressure vessels are an essential part of modern industrial plants and need special consideration regarding their design. The pressure as well as in many cases the content of the pressure vessel are a major source of danger. Because of that a comprehensive proof of safety is required. Based on this potential hazard the design and testing regulations are rooted in legal requirements with little space for deviations. The most common regulations are the harmonized norms of the Pressure Equipment Directive, in this case the DIN-EN 13445, and the Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). Both regulations cover most of the global pressure vessels. In international plan engineering if it is a possibility, that a choice between one of the two is available, the question arises, which one offers the lighter and more efficient design. This thesis should show what loads and effects need to be considered and how the basic parameters of pressure and temperature effect the results, based on an example from heavy industry. The results should show the requirements for wall thickness and the maximum allowable pressure. A large influence is the selection of materials, where the differences required the development of a comparative methodology. These material differences showed that for the selected examples an individual consideration is required for the best results. Although generalized assertions, of less precision, can be made.
