Abstract
Electroslag Rapid Remelting is a novel remelting technology which combines the advantages of the well known continuous casting proces with the standard electroslag remelting process. Electroslag Rapid Remelting allows the production of 130 - 250 mm round or square billets at meltrates of 400 - 700 kg/h, which is approx. 4 - times the meltrate of a conventional remelting process at comparable billet dimensions. The paper describes the development of a watercooled T-shaped copper mold, which not only is responsible for initial solidification, but also for current transfer by means of a current conductive element built into the copper wall. The T-shaped mold further allows remelting of elctrodes with a diameter of at least 1 1/2 times the billet diameter. For the continuous production a withdrawal and cutting equipment was developed, which allows also transfer of the melting current via the withdrawal pinch rolls. The paper describes the behaviour of the main electrical parameters such as voltage, current, current ration power and specific power consumption in dependance of meltrate, slag composition, electrode size etc. An investigation of the liquid metal pool shape and depth reveals the favourable condition for solidification, wlhich is also confirmed by the secondary dandrite arm spacing.
